Scooter in the snow

Winter is Coming

There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear.

Here in St. Louis, we have plenty of opportunities for nice winter riding days. Even the cold days can be managed with the right gear. Warm thermal layers and windproof outerwear are a good investment. If you ride regularly year-round, you may want to consider a windscreen or scooter skirt/kilt.

But if you’re not quite ready to brave cooler temps and want to store your bike for winter, here are some tips!

  1. Clean your scooter: Dirt, dust, and grime can harm your bike’s finish over time. Give your bike a comprehensive clean before storing it for the winter. Rinse off dirt, dust, and grime that’s built up. For hardened dirt or dried bugs that don’t come off with a simple rinse, you can soak the surfaces under a damp towel. Clean your wheels and tires, and make sure to dry everything thoroughly.
  2. Change the oil and filter: Changing the oil is a vital and simple step to take to avoid forking out money down the road. Check your bike’s manual before topping up fluids, and make sure you’re using the products recommended by the bike’s manufacturer. It’s also a good idea to change your oil filter before storing your scooter.
  3. Top off the fuel tank and add a fuel stabilizer: Fill up your fuel tank to prevent moisture from accumulating inside the tank. If possible, use ethanol-free fuel. Add a fuel stabilizer to keep the fuel fresh and prevent it from breaking down over time.
  4. Remove the battery or use a battery tender: If you’re storing your scooter for an extended period, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Whether you remove the battery or not, make sure to hook it up to a battery tender or charge it periodically to keep it in good condition.
  5. Cover your scooter: Use a quality cover to protect your bike from dust, moisture, and other elements. Make sure the cover fits your bike properly and is made of breathable material to prevent moisture buildup.
  6. Store your scooter in a dry, secure location: Store your scooter in a garage, shed, or storage unit to protect it from the elements. Make sure the location is dry, secure, and out of the way, but accessible for periodic checks. If you must store your scooter outside, use a cover and choose a sheltered location. Be sure to secure the scooter with a quality lock and chain.

These tips should help you prepare your scooter for winter storage and keep it in good condition until you’re ready to ride again. Stay safe and enjoy the winter season!
